Understanding the Demographic Dimensions of Market Opportunity
November 21st, 2014
This report analyzes demographic fundamentals (population growth, aging and urbanization), identifies the role of urbanization in the development process, and rates relative urban market opportunities among countries through 2050. We conclude that the United States will remain the largest urban market for the foreseeable future and that China will surpass Japan as the second-largest urban market by 2020. India has positive demographic fundamentals and a recent record of strong growth; it is likely to overtake advanced European economies and rank third by 2045. Brazil could rise to number four by 2050 but presents the greatest long term uncertainty, given its inconsistent economic performance and demographic trends that are less favorable than other emerging markets.
